Youth N’ Power Summer Day Camp 2022
The Youth N’ Power summer day camp is for youth in grades 3-9. Campers learn about environmental justice issues and how a community comes together to create change! We teach the youth about what makes up our environment and introduce them to the climate crisis. Youth are encouraged to draw connections between what they have heard and what they don’t yet understand.
Programming and activities take place both at the camp’s home base in Minneapolis and through area field trips. Youth will:
- Learn where we get our energy from and why renewable sources like solar help create an “energy democracy”
- Tour the Minnesota State Capitol to learn how policies and laws are made and why it’s important to share personal stories and values with decision-makers in government
- Explore different kinds of power such as the power inherent in our bodies and as individuals as well as the power we hold and can grow as a community
- Learn how to reduce waste
- Forage in a forest
- Work every week in a community garden
- Learn and practice public speaking, leadership, and event planning skills
Throughout camp, we interweave experiences and education with time for games and summer activities. Our Youth N’ Power teenage apprentices lead small teams of younger campers, so that youth get to help other youth.
Youth N’ Power honors youth’s perspective, ideas, and curiosity. We empower and energize and have a meaningful and fun time at camp. We get to know each other and build a beloved community together!
Camp Details:
The 2022 Youth N’ Power day camp runs from July 18-August 4, Monday-Thursday each week from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Healthy lunches are provided.
The camp is open to youth who will be going into 3rd through 9th grade in the coming school year.
Our primary camp space is located at 1720 Glenwood Ave, Minneapolis (across from Redeemer Center for Life). Camp includes a number of field trips. These are located mostly in the Twin Cities metro, but all are within a one-hour drive. Details about each field trip will be provided to all participants before camp starts.
We will be offering two bonus activities: On Friday, August 5, there will be a half-day environmental justice fair to wrap up the summer and share small group presentation. We also hope to plant a tree! On Sunday, August 7, we are participating in the Seeds To Harvest Northside world record attempt at the largest chain of high-5s and game of catch!
Enrollment Fee:
The Youth N’ Power summer day camp is 3 weeks and has a total enrollment fee of $600 per participant. Paying this full amount helps us cover all costs and ensure the camp is accessible for all. We also offer a pay-as-you-can sliding scale from $100-$500 per participant. On the payment page, you will be able to enter the enrollment fee that fits your budget.
We are grateful for the Noelle Ness Fund for making this sliding scale possible and for their generous support of all MNIPL youth programs.
