Just Solar Bulk Buy: Twin Cities

MNIPL is excited to offer a Twin Cities residential bulk buy program, allowing community members to save as much as 50% on a home or business solar installation through incentives and a group discount. Buy joining the bulk buy, you are supporting community-based clean energy and a diverse and equitable solar workforce, while making an investment that will benefit you financially.

Our selection committee chose Apadana Solar Technologies, a local minority-owned solar developer, as our bulk buy installer. The committee included a representative from Fresh Energy, as well as community members who have experience with a range of solar companies. Apadana was chosen because of their commitment to an equitable and accessible solar industry, competitive pricing, and an excellent reputation.

MNIPL is also partnering with a local credit union to offer low-interest loans to make this opportunity available with no money down.

FAQ

What is the typical upfront cost of installing solar? What is the typical payback period and savings over time?

An average residential solar array size is 7-8kW, which has a total cost of around $20,000 before the federal solar tax credit and ten-year Xcel solar rewards savings. The size of the array depends on your electric usage, which you can lower through efficiency upgrades.

With the 30% federal tax credit for solar, along with the local Xcel Solar Rewards incentive and the bulk buy discount, you can save as much as 50% of the upfront cost.

A typical 7-8kW system will pay for itself within around 10 years, but the savings will continue for the full 25+ year life of the array.

This opportunity can be done with no money down through receiving a low-interest loan (<3%) from CU Green or Center for Energy and the Environment.
