Thank you: COVID Community Action Duluth!

Our Duluth team sends out a huge thank you to all who supported our three-month COVID-19 support drive. Local donors contributed $4,000 to serve more than 400 people and assist 6 nonprofits and 6 local businesses.

In March of 2020, Duluth MNIPL members learned that one of our member churches was providing meals to the homeless warming shelter held in their building during the winter months, in part because the social shutdown brought on by COVID made it difficult to obtain meals from food shelves.

Other members related how many restaurants were closed locally, and how many workers were laid off as a result. An idea was born – why not buy local restaurant takeout food for those in need, and help two groups at once?

Hence was born Duluth COVID Community Action, providing meals for community members at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church – Duluth for two days with donated food and take out from Burrito Union. The effort expanded to assist other partner organizations that help at risk populations, including American Indian Community Housing Organization, Steve O’Neil Apartments, LifeHouse, and Loaves and Fishes.

Support included providing take out meals, as well as direct grocery purchases and even laundry supportive services. Duluth MNIPL members suspended assistance at the end of June to assess past actions for potential future Duluth COVID Community support.

Thank you to all who contributed to this community effort!
